About SOGC

President

Dr. Mark Heywood

Dr. Mark Heywood grew up in Scotland and England, attended medical school in Dundee, Scotland, not far from the golf links of St Andrews. He completed an internship in Edinburgh, before heading to Winnipeg for his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He was then fortunate enough to have Drs. Bob Lotocki and Garry Krepart as mentors for a Gynecologic Oncology fellowship. They kept him on as a partner for the next fifteen years, before moving to his current position with the Vancouver team, where he has been for the past six years.

Outside of clinical practice he has been active in various areas of medical politics; Manitoba Medical Association, Executive of Board 1996 - 2000, President 1999 -2000; Canadian Medical Association, Council of Health Policy & Economics 1996 -1999, Board 2000 - 2003; University Medical Group (MB), President 2002 -2003.

During his involvement with MMA he was involved with Fee for Service negotiations in 1998 leading to binding arbitration, which continues today. His CMA involvement included participation in the Board retreat, in 2000, for corporate restructuring and governance.

His time at the University of Manitoba included being Residency Program Director from 2000 - 2003, and culminated in a short tenure, twenty months, as Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Manitoba, and Medical Director of Women's Health Program for Winnipeg Health Authority. The temptation and new opportunity in Vancouver cut these enjoyable and challenging roles short.

Since settling in Vancouver in 2005 he has become site Head of Gynecology at Vancouver General Hospital, 2006 until present, and Gynecologic Oncology Program Director 2006-2009, and President of VGH Medical Staff, 2009 to present.

He was involved with the Royal College Specialty Examination Board in Obstetrics & Gynecology 2001 - 2008, and Nucleus Committee 2004 - 2008; and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada (GOC) as Program Committee Chair for the AGM, 2004 - 2008.

Participation with the SOGC includes; Gynecology Guidelines Committee, 1994 -1998 and 2009 to present; Finance Committee 2005-2010, Treasurer 2006 - 2010; Council 2002 - 2005 (Central Region Alternate Chair); 2006 - 2010 (Treasurer); 2010 - 2011 (President Elect); Executive 2006 - 2010 (Treasurer); 2010-2011 (President elect)
